Review: Kinky boots – the movie

Entertainment and Marketing Combined

review kinky bootsYears ago a friend tried to teach me how to walk on high heels. It involved all kind of movements with my hips and my buttocks and it was so utterly totally not me that I soon gave up.

Ever since I admire women walking on high heels in a natural way immensely. And my admiration increases when it is men walking on those torture devices. Watching the movie “Kinky Boots” immediately catapulted me back to those dreaded lessons of back then.

The first time I watched the movie I didn’t get past this memory, so I hardly noticed the value of this film. There are at least two reasons why you should definitely try to watch this movie if you get the chance.

The story of Kinky Boots

It’s all about a shoe factory

Two boys are growing up in England in different places. One loves to wear high heels and wants to dance, but is destined by his father to be a mean black giant of a boxer. The other one doesn’t know what he wants, but is destined by his father to be the successor of a factory of high quality shoes. “They last a life time, Charlie”.

Only passions, great passions, can elevate the soul to great things - Denis DiderotCharlie feels obligated to take over the factory when his father suddenly dies and he finds out the business is nearing a bankruptcy. He has to fire people and one of them – Lauren – accuses him of taking it too easy and blaming his environment instead of himself for the situation he is in. This triggers him to start thinking new ways.

Oscar has broken the ties with his old surroundings and now goes through life as drag queen Lola, a nightclub singer.

At a chance encounter Charlie comes Lola to the rescue when some hooligans attack her. She breaks one of her heels and is complaining about the poor quality of women’s shoes when worn by a man.

This remark is the set off for a whole new niche market for Charlie’s factory.

Why you should watch

It’s very entertaining

The second time I watched the film I enjoyed the British humor and really appreciated the feel-good nature of the movie. The whole story is about friendship, open mindedness and love.

Passion for the things you do.

  • The intenseness with which Lola makes her shows and her designs.
  • The love for shoes that Charlie has despite his unwillingness to take over the factory.
  • The friendship between those very different men.
  • The budding love between Charlie and Lauren. (I was so glad he got rid of his dreadful fiancé he had at first).
  • And of course the big success in the end.

Why you definitely should watch

It’s a lesson in marketing

The third time I watched I was blown away by the marketing lessons that are in it. Maybe you are an Internet entrepreneur like me and then you really should watch this movie.

  • It’s a huge lesson in seeing possibilities.
  • It shows how you should listen to your aimed customers.
  • It’s about aiming for perfection and complying to your customer’s needs

bootsCan a niche market be about minorities?

Don’t be biased

Every time I see the film again, I see a different aspect (I tend to watch movies that I like several times!)

The other day I was appalled when I read someone’s view on homosexuals on another platform I write for. It reminded me that we are not all the same, not thinking alike, not brought up in comparable ways. For me it was a big lesson.

A big part of the movie is about Simon going through life as Lola. It’s about prejudice and narrow-mindedness.

And I was thinking: if we want to be entrepreneurs we have to deal with small groups. We call them niche markets. Isn’t that the same as dealing with minorities?

I hope you have as much fun with this movie as I had.

Will you let me know in a comment if you have watched it?
